After forty-seven years of caring for thousands of Hudson Valley residents, Dr. Lewis J. Sims, a legend and pillar of the community, is retiring from practicing medicine.
A native of the Hudson Valley, Sims grew up on a dairy farm in Kerhonkson, NY where he developed his love for caring for animals. Sims dreamed he would one day become a Veterinarian until he later realized his calling was to care for people and not animals. After attending high school, Sims attended SUNY New Paltz where he earned his Bachelors of Science in Biology. From there he continued his education and medical training attending New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York, NY where he earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). After residency and additional training, Dr. Sims returned to the Hudson Valley in 1973 to establish his podiatry practice in Poughkeepsie where it has been in continual operation ever since.
A pillar locally, Sims was also very active in the community volunteering for various organizations such as the Temple Beth-El, the Jewish Community Center, the Harding Club as well as coaching youth baseball and basketball. Sims also had a very successful second career as a top high school and collegiate basketball referee for over thirty-five years.
Professionally, as a physician, Dr. Lewis Sims is very well respected by all in the medical community receiving countless awards and recognitions from the local hospitals, podiatry associations and community organizations over his long career. Most recently, in 2019, Dr. Lewis Sims was the joint recipient along with his son, Dr. Erik Sims of MidHudson Regional Hospital’s Physician of the Year.
Dr. Sims has built his career and his podiatry practice on a patient-centered culture. He established his practice by providing patients the very best foot care with compassion and professionalism. He made his patients feel special by caring for each and every one of them like they were family. His work ethic and his ability to go above and beyond with a constant smile and unparalleled energy, is why he is beloved by patients, staff, colleagues, and the local hospitals. It is this culture that Dr. Sims built his practice on from day one that is still in place today. This culture and focus on patient care continues today at Sims & Associates Podiatry under the leadership of Dr. Erik Sims.
A lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, Dr. Lewis Sims will remain in the Town of Poughkeepsie where he and his family have lived since starting his practice. Dr. Sims will be taking more time to enjoy life and his family. Together, with his loving and supporting wife, Rita of over fifty-three years they have four sons, Todd, Gregory, Jedd and Erik and enjoy spending time with their twelve grandchildren.
